About Us

Akasaka Aono, a long-established wagashi (traditional Japanese confectionery) shop located in Akasaka, Tokyo, has been preserving the taste of tradition since its founding in 1899, over 120 years ago. In addition to the main store, it has expanded to a total of six locations including Akasaka Mitsuke, Tokyo Daimaru, Tameike Sanno Satellite, Akasaka Sacas, and Benkeibashi,. The flagship product, “Akasaka Mochi,” along with seasonal fresh confections, various celebratory sweets, and gift sets, have been offered, earning the love of customers across multiple generations for their high-quality wagashi. At the Akasaka main store, you can enjoy fresh confections in the eat-in space, including limited-edition sweets made on the spot. Continuing to sell traditional sweets like mochi and youkan since the Meiji era, the shop has been cherished by many families for its wide selection of beloved confections. While honoring tradition, it also appeals to new customers with innovative techniques and other initiatives.

Akasaka Mochi

Akasaka Aono also serves namagashi (literally “fresh confections”) which you can enjoy in their dining area.
Akasaka Aono has been honing the craft of wagashi-making for over 100 years and is undeniably one of the best wagashi shops in Tokyo for high-quality Japanese desserts.

Revolutionary Packaging!

Even though the store has been open since 1899, the company never fails to incorporate innovative practices. For example, the Akasaka mochi is wrapped together in individual furoshiki-style packages. This store was the first to use furoshiki (wrapping cloth) for this kind of confection.

Mochi With Walnut and Brown Sugar as Secret Ingredients

Its signature item is Akasaka mochi, a kinako mochi with walnut and brown sugar kneaded in (648 yen/3 pcs). The elegantly flavored mochi made with strictly selected ingredients and traditional techniques is wrapped in a traditional, Japanese furoshiki-style package.

Namagashi with Seasonal Flavors

For those who wish to enjoy sweets in the store, we recommend Namagashi such as kusa dango with an irresistible scent of yomogi greens or goma meigetsu topped with flavorful sesame and sweet thick soy glaze. There are also seasonal limited edition Namagashi for a welcoming surprise.

Akasaka Hikawa Matsuri 赤坂氷川祭

The Akasaka Hikawa Festival is a traditional festival that has been continued since the Edo period. It is known for the procession of two portable shrines and thirteen Edo-style floats, protected by local residents, within the precincts of the Akasaka Hikawa Shrine. Through its long history, the festival has strengthened the bonds of the community and continues to preserve tradition as an important festival.
